Collab Canvas

A better way to start a partnership.

Most collaborations begin with a handshake and good intentions, then fade into quiet disappointment. Collab Canvas helps both sides map what they need and what they offer, and leave with a pilot they chose together.

A first conversation designed to build synergy.

Most partnerships begin when one person arrives with an idea and the other agrees. Collab Canvas guides both partners through shared brainstorming, finding synergy, prioritizing, and selecting a pilot.

Sessions run in person or online, take about 1.5 hours, and end with a shared goal and real alignment.

COLLAB CANVAS EN 7.0

Four steps. Both voices. One pilot.

1
Map independently

Each partner fills in what they can offer and what they need, at the same time, separately. The session starts from two full pictures, not one pitch.

2
Find the overlap

Together you read every sticky note aloud and locate the Synergy Zone: the space where your partnership can create value neither side could produce alone.

3
Evaluate and prioritize

You pick the criteria together and score each option on your own. Then you talk it through, explain your reasoning, and agree on a shared score. The totals show which ideas you both value most.

4
Co-create your pilot and first smart goal

You turn your top-scoring (or other co-prioritized) idea into a small, low-cost pilot and one shared smart goal. Then you reflect on the process and celebrate. This is a different way to start a partnership: you create it together from the first step.

Andrés Robles, creator of Collab Canvas

I'm Andy. I've been facilitating partnerships and collaboration methods for 12 years nonstop.

"I created Collab Canvas after watching too many collaborations begin with one side persuading the other. Commitment faded, and the partnership ended in quiet disappointment."

I developed Collab Canvas in 2020 through Transition Lab, drawing on years of facilitating cross-sector partnerships across Latin America and the United States. The method has gone through seven iterations since then, each version shaped by real sessions, real feedback, and real partnerships.

I've presented and facilitated sessions at the Engagement Scholarship Consortium Conference and the Kansas State University Engagement Week poster session, working with facilitators, team leaders, HR professionals, NGOs, and scholars who need partnerships that produce synergy.

Collab Canvas works best for certain people.

✓ This is for you if…

  • ✅ You're about to start a partnership, coalition, or collaboration
  • ✅ You want both sides to feel ownership from day one
  • ✅ You're a facilitator, team leader, HR professional, NGO, or engaged scholar
  • ✅ You believe the best partnerships are built on reciprocity
  • ✅ You need a concrete output, not just a good conversation

✗ This is not for you if…

  • 🚫 You've already decided the terms and need the other side to agree
  • 🚫 You prefer to compete rather than co-create
  • 🚫 You like partnerships where one person leads and the other follows
  • 🚫 You're looking for a quick transactional deal, not a real collaboration

Common questions

A typical session runs about 1.5 hours. That includes the independent mapping phase, the Synergy Zone exploration, the prioritization process, and agreeing on a first co-created pilot project.

Yes. The canvas works in person with printed sheets and sticky notes, or virtually using the Google Docs template, Mural, Miro, or Spatial. The online version is free to use. Just click "Use Online" above.

Both. I offer training so your team can run Collab Canvas sessions independently, and I offer facilitation where I run the session with your partners directly. The right fit depends on your situation. Reach out and let's talk.

The canvas is designed for two parties (Player A and Player B), each represented by one person or a small group. Key roles include a facilitator, a writer for each partner, and optional observer and timekeeper roles. Most sessions work best with 2–8 participants total.

Yes. The Collab Canvas Toolkit (v7.0) is free to download. It includes everything you need to run your own session: instructions, the full canvas, and facilitation tips. If you want hands-on training or a facilitated session, that's when we talk.
